Barbara Simko Stopa, 81, of Derry passed away Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2019, in Newhaven Court at Lindwood, Hempfield Township. Born March 8, 1937, in Latrobe, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Stella (Guzik) Simko. Barbara was a retired nurse for Excela Health Westmoreland Hospital and a member of St. James Roman Catholic Church, New Alexandria. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Harry Stopa, in 2014, and a daughter, Victoria Lynn Newman. She is survived by her son, Raymond B. Stopa and his wife, Leslie; two daughters, Bonita S. Harris and Patricia Lynn Stopa; an “unofficial daughter,” Gloria Denise Worthy; four grandchildren, Nichole McKenzie, Jessie Harris, Seth Stopa and Shannon Stopa; her brother, Joseph Simko and his wife, Kim; several nieces and nephews, and her best friend, Linda Washabaugh, who has been with her through it all. Visitation will be 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 4, in Frederick Funeral Home Inc., 1543 Ligonier St., Latrobe. A funeral Mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, in St. James Roman Catholic Church, New Alexandria, with Monsignor Larry J. Kulick, JCL, VG, as celebrant.
