Caroline M. Shaffer, 78, of Latrobe, died Saturday, Aug. 6, 2011, in Latrobe Care Center. Born July 13, 1933, in Blairsville, she was a daughter of the late William R. Ragan and Goldie Swauger Ragan Balduc. She retired from Excela Health Latrobe Hospital in 1996 with 15 years of service in the central service department. She was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church of Latrobe. She was a graduate of Derry Area High School Class of 1953. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert L. Shaffer, in 1994; a granddaughter, Jennifer N. Shaffer; a grandson, Sgt. Jason A. Shaffer (Iraq, April 5, 2007); and two sisters, Mildred Marsh and Geraldine Agnetti. She is survived by four children, David L. Shaffer and his wife, Sylvia, of Welches, Ore., Carol Ann Heide and her husband, Bob, of Latrobe, Roger A. Shaffer and his wife, Gwendolyn, of Huntly, Va., and James R. Shaffer and his wife, Linda, of Linden, Va.; two grandchildren, Eric Shaffer, of Oakland Park, Fla., and Nicole Heide, of Latrobe; two sisters, Betty Frew, of Downers Grove, Ill., and Mary Lou, of Belle Vernon; a brother, William Ragan, of SE Albany, Ore.; four stepgrandchildren; and five stepgreat-grandchildren. Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the FREDERICK FUNERAL HOME INC., 1543 Ligonier St., Latrobe. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday in Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Latrobe. Burial will be in Blairsville Cemetery.
