Dr. T. Jean Mazero

Dr. T. Jean Mazero, 84, of Latrobe, PA died on November 25, 2008 at UPMC. She was the daughter of the late Elsie (Fiorina) and Dominic Mazero of Latrobe. She graduated from Latrobe High School and then attended the Latrobe Hospital School of Nursing graduating in 1944. She then began a long life dedicated to nursing education and community care. She served as Clinical Nursing Professor at Westmoreland Hospital, Altoona General Hospital, Lancaster General Hospital, Allegheny General Hospital, and Edinboro State University. She returned to her hometown and became Director of Nursing at Latrobe Area Hospital. After five years she returned to the university setting and attained her Masters degree in Education and ultimately her PhD. Her dissertation "Theory Building and Curriculum Planning" was recommended for publication. She assumed a position at Westmoreland County Community College as Assistant to the President and continued as Professor of Clinical Nursing. She concluded her illustrious nursing career dedication as Coordinator of Research at the college. In addition to the ANA and Association of Institutional Research, she also held membership in Delta Kappa Gamma an honorary Women's Educational Society. Once described as an "Architect of Nursing Education in Community Hospitals," her dedication and reputation as a nursing educator was widely recognized. Upon retirement she continued her consultative role in nursing education and remained steadfast in promoting the professionalism of the nurse in all settings. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a brother Doyle Mazero and a nephew Michael Mazero. She is survived by a brother Dr. John R. "Bob" Mazero and his wife Rosemary of Latrobe, three nephews, John Mazero and his wife Joyce of Dallas, TX, Jeff Mazero and his wife Erika of Woodbury, NJ, Joe Mazero and his wife Lynna of Indianapolis, IN, a niece Mary Wyrick and her husband Rick of Columbus, OH. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday and 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday in the FREDERICK FUNERAL HOME INC., 1543 Ligonier St., Latrobe, PA 15650. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Latrobe. Memorial contributions may be made in her name to the Latrobe Area Hospital Charitable Foundation, Nursing Scholarship Fund, 1 Mellon Way, Latrobe, PA 15650.
