Edward Leonard Maurer, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on December 8, 2024, at the age of 87, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, Ed was the treasured son of Anthony and Helen (Zizan) Maurer. He graduated from Johnstown High School and went on to earn his degree in Industrial Engineering from Penn State University. Ed’s life was marked by dedication and service, including his honorable tenure in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam conflict.
Professionally, Ed had a distinguished 30-year career as an engineer with Asea Brown Boveri, where his expertise and dedication left a lasting mark. Beyond his career, Ed’s commitment to his community was unwavering. He served on the Greater Latrobe School Board, was an esteemed 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, and took on numerous leadership roles during his retirement years at Oceanside Village in Surfside Beach, South Carolina such as President of the South Strand Lions Club. His stewardship there was honored with the naming of the bocce courts in Oceanside Village in his recognition.
Faith was central to Ed’s life. He was a devout member of several Catholic communities, including CHRISTUS St. Joseph Village Catholic Church in Coppell, TX; St. Michael Catholic Church in Garden City Beach, SC; and St. Vincent Basilica Parish in Latrobe, PA.
In 2019, Ed and his beloved wife, Linda, moved to St. Joseph Village in Coppell, Texas, to be closer to family. He was deeply cherished by the community and was grateful for the love and support as the years brought more challenges. Above all, Ed’s greatest joy was his 57-year marriage to Linda Marie (Fonzi) Maurer. Together, they built a life defined by love, partnership, and unwavering devotion.
Ed was preceded in death by his wife, Linda; his parents, Anthony and Helen; his sister-in-law, Bertha LaRocca; and brothers-in-law, Evelino LaRocca and Pete Omodio. He is survived by his children, Tony (Katy), Edward II (Nancy), and Tami Maurer; his brothers, Ronald (Linda) and Randall (Gwen Hartnet); his sister-in-law, Lena Omodio; and his cherished grandchildren, Tyler, Natalie, Eddie, and Megan.
Ed’s life was a testament to kindness, dedication, and a sense of humor that brought joy to everyone he met. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
A memorial Mass will be held at CHRISTUS St. Joseph Village Catholic Church in Coppell, TX, on Saturday, December 14, at 1:00 p.m., and at St. Vincent Basilica Parish in Latrobe, PA, on Saturday, December 21, at 10:00 a.m., with a reception following at The Grove. Ed will be laid to rest at St. Vincent Cemetery. Military honors will be rendered by the Blairsville Military Honor Guard at the cemetery.
