Ethel Mae (Matthews) Slater passed away peacefully to receive her reward in Heaven, on Tuesday, March 1, 2016, after a brief illness. She was at her daughter's home in Connecticut, surrounded by her family. She was born in Homestead Park, PA to Frank and Ethel (King) Matthews on January 23, 1922. Ethel was a longtime Latrobe resident, moving there in 1966. She was active in her community, giving freely of her time and talent to many organizations; Meals on Wheels, Salvation Army Advisory Board, Latrobe Hospital Ladies Aide Society, Gideons International Auxiliary, and the church work that she especially loved. At the Latrobe United Methodist Church, she served passionately as Sunday school teacher, prayer group leader, and on numerous other committees. She was currently a member of the Latrobe Presbyterian Church. She was known for her infectious smile and kindness, and everyone that knew her knew she was one of the best pie makers around. A beloved Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother, and friend to all. She is survived by her loving husband Thomas of 69 wonderful years, daughter Pamela and her husband Kenneth of Monroe, CT, their three children, Ryan and his wife, Kristina and their beautiful daughters, Annabelle and Emeline of Monroe, CT, Sarah and boyfriend Rory of NYC, NY, Thomas and girlfriend Christina of Fairfield, CT, and many much-loved nieces and nephews. Her family was the center of “Bobbie’s” life and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, brought her much joy. Preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Ethel Matthews, brothers, Robert (Catherine), Francis (Elizabeth), sisters, Grace Fricker (Fred) and Betty Broadright. Ethel’s family and faith in God meant everything to her. Visitation will be on Friday, March 11, 2016, at the Frederick Funeral Home, Inc., 1543 Ligonier St., Latrobe, PA 15650 from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. A celebration of her life will take place on Saturday, March 12, 2016, at the Latrobe Presbyterian Church, Latrobe, PA at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend Clark R. Kerr officiating. Everyone is asked to go directly to the church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Ethel’s name to JDRF or Reflections of Grace Foundation.
