George E. Mitchell Sr., 78, of Derry, died Friday, Aug. 7, 2009, in his home. He was born Sept. 24, 1930, in Youngstown, a son of the late George J. and Josephine Quinn Mitchell. He was a retired union carpenter. He was a member of Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, Youngstown, United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America Local 1024 and a member and former captain of the Youngstown Fire Department. He was a member of the Army and was a Korean War veteran. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Sylvia M. Mitchell, in 2008; a daughter, Josephine Marie Will; and a sister, Martha Fry. He is survived by a son, George E. Mitchell Jr. and his fiance, Wendy Orndorff, of Latrobe; four daughters, Cindy Beacom and her husband, Tim, of Blairsville, Susan Nicely and her husband, Tim, of Derry, Georgia Robinsky and her husband, Mark, of Latrobe, and Rita Wigfield, of Derry; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Charles Mitchell and his wife, Mary, of Youngstown. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday in FREDERICK FUNERAL HOME INC., 1543 Ligonier St., Latrobe, PA 15650, where a funeral liturgy will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Unity Cemetery, Latrobe. The combined funeral detail of local American Legion and VFW veterans will provide military honors at 9:15 a.m. Tuesday in the funeral home.
