Gilbert J. "Bert" Sulkey

Gilbert J. "Bert" Sulkey, 88, of Allentown, died Sunday, May 25, 2014, at Above & Beyond Personal Care Home. He was born Sept. 30, 1925, in Latrobe, son of the late Joseph J. Sulkey Sr. and Mary Mellicant Sulkey. He was retired after 43 years of service as a steelworker for Latrobe Steel Company. He was a member of St. Vincent Basilica Parish, Latrobe Elks, American Legion Post 515, Lesco Credit Union - board member, and volunteer at St. Vincent Basilica Parish. He was an avid golfer at Latrobe Elks Golfcourse where he still holds the course record of 61 on 18 holes. He was a member of the Army Air Force during World War II. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Joseph Sulkey Jr., Henry Sulkey and Ernest Sulkey. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Viola (Falbo) Sulkey; two children, Craig Sulkey and his wife, Jean, of New Jersey, and Monica Hayes and her husband, Doug, of Puerto Rico; a sister, Mary Huchette and her husband, Paul; granddaughter, Erin Triano and her husband, Todd; two great-grandchildren, Ava and Ben, as well as several nieces and nephews and great and great-great-nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 29, 2014, at FREDERICK FUNERAL HOME INC., 1543 Ligonier St., Latrobe, PA 15650. A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, May 30, 2014, in St. Vincent Basilica with Father Thomas P. Curry, O.S.B., officiating. Burial will be in St. Vincent Cemetery, Latrobe. The St. Vincent Rosary Altar Society will recite the Rosary on Thursday at 2:30 PM in the funeral home. The combined funeral detail of local American Legion and VFW members will provide military honors at 9:30 a.m. Friday in the funeral home.
