James K. Metz

October 13, 1935 — April 25, 2014

James K. Metz, 78, of Latrobe, died Friday, April 25, 2014, at Greensburg Care Center, Greensburg. He was born Oct. 13, 1935, in Whitney, a son of the late James Phillip Metz and Gertrude Hamilton Metz. Jim was formerly employed by Eidemiller and Donegal Construction and retired from Derry Construction. Jim enjoyed riding motorcycles watching AMC classic movies, hunting, fishing and going to auctions. He was a social member of Cooperstown, United and Hostetter Slovak clubs. He was a loving and devoted husband and father. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers-in-law, William Shugars and Tom Gulibon. He is survived by his loving wife, Betty (Shugars) Metz; two children, Vanessa McCue and James Piscar; five stepchildren, Barry (Diane) Long, Delbert (Sue) Long, Shelly (Rick) Rupert, Cathy (Ron) Slatosky and Bill (Vanessa) Long; 11 grandchildren, Natalie and Haley Piscar, Richard (Connie) Rupert, Courtney (Douglas) Markiewicz, Ryan (Allison) Long, Derek (Tasha) Long, Dana (Shawn) Soflin, Nathan (Chelsea) Long, Kaitlyn Long, Tucker Slatosky and Zachary Long; he will be deeply missed by his eight great-grandchildren who adored him, Taylor, Casey, Deven, Zoey, Abigail, Addyson, Talia and Benjamin; two brothers-in-law, Francis (Pat) Shugars and Regis (Michele) Shugars; and three sisters-in-law, Lucille Shugars, Janet Gulibon and Regina (Bryan) Trice; also his favorite aunt, Catherine Wadsworth; uncle, Kenneth (Pat) Hamilton; and numerous cousins. Jim will be missed by his faithful companion and basement buddy, Brutus. Visitation from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday, May 1, 2014, at FREDERICK FUNERAL HOME INC., 1543 Ligonier St., Latrobe, PA 15650. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 1, 2014, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Mike Alfieri. Burial in Unity Cemetery, Latrobe.
