Janice M. Spewock, 69, of Loyalhanna, died peacefully Thursday, Aug. 23, 2018, at Barns Place, Latrobe. She was born Dec. 6, 1948, a daughter of Ted Spewock, 97, and Agnes (Ulishney) Spewock, 95. In addition to her parents, she is survived by her sisters, Beverly Ray, Darlene Peddicord (Butch), Maxine Sarneso (Matt) and Bonnie Baker (Bill Murphy); as well as several nieces and nephews. Her career included work in graphic design, oil landscape paintings and Abobe computer systems. She graduated in 1966 from Derry Area High School. She won a two-year scholarship to the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. Three days after her 1968 graduation, she drove to Columbus, Ohio to find her first career job through the placement agency. She started with Merrill Publishing, creating books in education and training. Six months later, she accepted a paste-up position with Bayer and Bowman, a top ad agency, where she stayed for two years. Bob Evans Farms started its business and she contributed to many newspaper ads and brochures. Invited to her first female art studio, she helped design real estate floor plans and Krylon spray flyers. She rented space in downtown Columbus and started freelance for five years. She designed trademarks and nationwide ads, and created small business brochures. In 1977 she moved to Pittsburgh. Her first job was with an all male art studio. Then, in 1980, she managed Gallery M at Monroeville Mall and freelanced. She won numerous awards for oil landscape paintings. She entered the Three Rivers Arts Festival, won second place, and sold three paintings. She page setup catalogs for Black Box Computer Supplies. From 1981-1994, she entered juried art shows in Wexford, Monroeville, North Hills, Freeport and Indiana University, won more awards and sold more oil paintings. From 1989-1994, she did computer research posters in Adobe programs to create brochures, and newsletters for Veteran Affairs Oakland, Pittsburgh. From 1995-1999, she prepared oil paintings for a one-woman show at Penn State University, New Kensington. From 2008-2009, she was a Mine Safety Appliances mail coordinator. From 2009-2010, she worked for the CVS Pharmacy computer mail order department. Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 24, 2018, at the FREDERICK FUNERAL HOME INC., 1543 Ligonier St., Latrobe, PA 15650. Funeral services and burial will be private.
