Leonard G. Steving Sr., 82, of Latrobe, died Saturday, March 28, 2009, at home. Born Dec. 11, 1926, in Pittsburgh, he was a son of the late Charles Steving Sr. and Hazel (Pease) Steving. He was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church. Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a steelworker by Latrobe Steel Co. He was a World War II veteran, having served in the Navy. He was a member of BPOE Lodge 907, Cooperstown Veterans & Sportsmen Association, American Legion Post 982 and Post 515, and a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8643. He was a former member of the American Legion Post 982 Funeral Honor Guard. He was a strong high school athlete and eventually showed his true talent while playing for the Latrobe Zimbos semi-professional football team. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Charles Steving Jr., Paul Steving and Jack Steving; and two sisters, Estella Ermer and Laura Bush. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Margaret H. (Torzok) Steving; two sons, Leonard G. Steving Jr., and John P. Steving and his wife, Elizabeth, all of Latrobe; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the FREDERICK FUNERAL HOME INC., 1543 Ligonier St., Latrobe, where services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday with the Rev. August B. Twigg officiating. The combined funeral detail of American Legion Post 515 and VFW Post 3414 will provide military honors at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday in the funeral home.
