Russel W. Lowden

Russel W. Lowden, 84, of Latrobe, died Friday, Jan. 22, 2010, in Loyalhanna Care Center, Derry Township. Born Aug. 19, 1925, in Latrobe, he was a son of the late Robert and Elizabeth (Witherspoon) Lowden. He was a member of Latrobe United Methodist Church. Prior to retirement, he worked as a train dispatcher for the Pennsylvania Railroad. A World War II veteran, he served in the Marine Corps, and was a member of American Legion Post 515. He also was a member of Loyalhanna Lodge No. 275 F&AM, of which he was a past secretary. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia "Ginger" Lowden; two brothers, Ralph Lowden and Robert Lowden; and three sisters, Marian Campbell, Ruth Cox and Roberta Smith. He is survived by two sons, William R. Lowden and wife, Mary Jo, of Aurora, Ohio, and Paul R. Lowden and wife, Cindy, of Latrobe; grandchildren, Scott and Melissa (Lowden) McNeely and Stephanie Lowden, of Latrobe, Jonathan and Jessica (Lowden) Stiffy; great-grandchildren, Taylor Marie, of Canonsburg, Christopher Lowden and Mandy Johns, of Imperial, and Patrick Lowden, of Aurora, Ohio; his brother, Donald Lowden, of Myerstown; and his sister, Connie Briner, of Henderson, N.C.; and his dear friend, Norine Allen, also of Latrobe. Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday and from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the FREDERICK FUNERAL HOME INC., 1543 Ligonier St., Latrobe. A funeral service will be held at 9 a.m. Monday in Latrobe United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Henderson officiating. Everyone is asked to go directly to the church. A private burial will take place in Unity Cemetery, Latrobe. The combined funeral detail of local American Legion and VFW veterans will provide military honors at 7 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home.
