Sarah L. “Sally” Bennett of Latrobe passed away with family by her side Monday, Sept. 02, 2024, at Independence Health System - Westmoreland Hospital. Born December 20, 1938, in Latrobe she was the daughter of the late Harry Guy and Sophia (Bazzy) Guy Smolleck. After graduation from St. Xavier’s Academy, she was employed in the offices of Latrobe Steel until her marriage. Over the years she held various jobs, including working as a server in the 33rd Street Tavern of Mountain View Inn during the days of the Steel Curtain to, later in life, at Mountain View Inn’s Laundry Department. In addition, she took care of various families' children as childcare was her area of expertise, and sold corn at Firestone’s corn stand on Rt. 981. She liked being known as the Corn Lady, which was her favorite job, and she enjoyed all of her customers. Sally loved playing Bingo, loved going to church festivals and cooking. Sittee (grandma) will be remembered by her family for her immense love of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Most Saturday mornings her three great-granddaughters would visit while their Sittee would make them two pounds of bacon. When her great-granddaughters got a pig, they said they were never eating bacon again. She would laugh and tell everyone “But that didn’t last long." Sittee loved teaching them to make Syrian foods such as stuffed grape leaves. No one left her house hungry. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her stepfather, George Smolleck; her husband, James Bennett, a stillborn son; a son, David Bennett; and a sister, Georgianna “Cooky” Smolleck-Walinski. She is survived by three children, Jami N. Nanassy (Chuck), Tammi M. Popola (Dave), and Jonathan M. Bennett; four grandchildren, Tarah L. Brant (Chris), Todd “T.J.” Small, Neal M. Nanassy and Clay W. Nanassy; four great-grandchildren, Ayva, Carina and Tayah Mendez, and Jackson Brant; a dog, Mitzi, and her cat, Sunny. The family wishes to extend a special thank you to her son, Jonathan, who over the last several years was her near constant companion. As per her wishes there will be no public visitation. A memorial service will be held at her son, David Bennett’s gravesite, Unity Cemetery, Latrobe, PA on Sunday, Sept. 22, 2024, at noon. Memorial contributions can be made to the Make-A-Wish Foundation (https://wish.org/greaterpawv) or the animal rescue organization of your choice.
