William A. Kovalcik Sr., 80, of Latrobe (Unity Township), died Saturday, Dec. 1, 2012, in Excela Health Latrobe Hospital. Born July 27, 1932, in Latrobe, he was a son of the late John and Anna Cernance Kovalcik. Prior to retirement, he was a machinist for Elliott Co. He was a member of Holy Family Roman Catholic Church, Lloydsville Firemen's Club, Frontier Club and Jednota. He loved music, particularly polkas and country music. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather, whose family meant everything to him. He was a proud Korean War Navy veteran, having served on the USS Ticonderoga as a seaman first class. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret E. (Cooper) Kovalcik, in 2007; and two brothers, John Kovalcik and Clarence Kovalcik. He is survived by a daughter, Patricia A. Levay and her husband, Raymond "R.T.," of Latrobe; a son, William A. Kovalcik Jr., of Frackville; five grandchildren, Andrew, Margaret and Stephen Kovalcik and Megan Anne and Ray Levay Jr.; two sisters, Sister Virginia Kovalcik and Evelyn Zappa and her husband, Tony; two brothers, James Kovalcik and his wife, Donna, and Raymond Kovalcik and his wife, Elaine; two sisters-in-law, Rita Kovalcik and Helen Kovalcik; as well as several nieces and nephews. Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday and from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the FREDERICK FUNERAL HOME INC., 1543 Ligonier St., Latrobe, PA 15650. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, in Holy Family Roman Catholic Church with the Very Rev. Daniel C. Mahoney, VF, as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Vincent Cemetery, Unity Township. The combined funeral detail of local American Legion and VFW members will provide military honors Wednesday (at a time to be announced) in the funeral home.
