William V. Monroe, 62, of Latrobe, died Wednesday, March 11, 2009, in UPMC Presbyterian Hospital, Pittsburg. He was born June 4, 1946, in Jeannette, a son of the late William Sr. and Ruth Tanner Monroe. He retired with 26 years service as a welder for Standard Steel. He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, VFW Post 3414, American Legion Post 515, a lifelong member of the National Rifle Association and an honorary life member of the Lloydsville Sportsmen's Association. He was a staff sergeant in the Air Force and was honorably discharged after eight years, including two tours of duty in Vietnam. He is survived by his loving wife of 31 years, Gladys J. (Knaus) Monroe; two sons, Jeffrey M. Monroe and his wife, Brianne, of Ocean City, Md., and John W. Monroe, of Irving, Va.; and a daughter, Carrie A. (Monroe) Ruhlman and her husband, Christopher, of Raleigh, N.C. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday and 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday in the FREDERICK FUNERAL HOME INC., 1543 Ligonier St., Latrobe, PA 15650. The St. John's Rosary Altar Christian Mothers will recite the Rosary at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home. The combined funeral detail of American Legion Post No. 515 and VFW Post No. 3414 will provide military honors in the funeral home at 9:15 a.m. Monday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Monday in St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church with the Rev. Anthony J. Carbone officiating. Burial will be in Unity Cemetery.
